Waterbeds
Your waterbed can actually use more energy than anything else in your home, including your water heater and refrigerator. In other words, waterbeds can be big bad energy wasters. Make the following changes to limit the energy use.
Most waterbeds have electric coils underneath to heat them. Electric coils are expensive ways to heat anything. (Check out the pages on stoves and ovens.) Turning off the heat probably isn't an option. I'm told that it is impossibly uncomfortable to sleep on an unheated waterbed. So if you are you planning to buy one, search your heart and your wallet. Can you really afford the increase in your yearly electricity bill?
If you must have waterbed, or are already saddled with one, make the bed. No, I am not channelling your mother. Pulling the comforter up every day can save you more than 30 percent.
You can save another 10 percent by insulating the sides of the bed.
Finally, you can put your waterbed's heater on a timer so it doesn't run all day long.
